On Camp with the girls of the Chrysalis Foundation
October 10, 2011
On Saturday I drove 3 hours out of Joburg to a game farm in Limpopo called Kwaggasrus to meet and spend the day with the girls of Chrysalis Foundation. I managed to get Boutique Cupcakes to sponsor and bake each girl a unique cupcake from their bakery in Fourways. I also got sponsored by Moto Health and RMI who were kind enough to give me 40 caps, 40 pens, 40 exam pads, keyrings, lipices and bookmarks for each girl.
I met all the girls and I gave a talk on Coping with Anger, loss, trauma and grief in your life. I also spoke about forgiveness and how we need to forgive those who have wronged us in our past in order for us to move forward. There were lots of tears of girls who broke down telling me their harsh stories of what they are currently going through but sometimes being there for someone else doesn't necessarily mean knowing the exact right thing to say but sometimes its just helping that person cry and crying with them. I also taught them the difference between empathy and being sympathetic to one another.

The girls have big dreams, when I asked them what they each wanted to be I heard responses such as pilots, docters, psycologists and entrepreneurs. After we all discussed our problems we did team building outside where the 30 girls were split in 2 different groups. My team were the lions and I taught the girls how to make a warcry! We played volleyball, tag team, built pyrimads and had an amazing team building session.
After team building I then jumped in the pool and taught the girls how to swim as most of them had never been in a swimming pool before.
After handing over all the gifts I brought for them I then went on to thank them for an incredible day. I can honestly say that yesterday was one of the best days of my life. The girls taught me so much about myself and I am honored to have made some amazing new friends. They showed me that you should be grateful for everything you have in your life and not worry about the things you don't have but rather the blessing you do have! I didn't want to leave and I miss all you girls already!
